Over the past month or two occasionally my desktop computer's browsers (Chrome, IE) will stop working. I still have a connection and other programs work fine - windows can even check for updates. I can also ping websites. My laptop browser always works, as does xbox live.

The solution for this has always been to run CMD, do a "netsh winsock reset", and reboot. However, today even that does not work. Virus scans and GMER come up negative. Any suggestions on where to go from here? Thanks, have always appreciated the support on these forums!

I use Avast v5.1.889, Comodo firewall v 5.3, and windows firewall is off. I run through a linksys 4 port hard wired router which is connected to a Cox modem.

Hello hofflerb,

This doesn't sounds good.

Have you considered an option of replacing your Network Adapter? They are very reasonable.

Just an idea - what firewall / security suite do you have on the PC - it maybe the reboot that helps
I have known Norton to do this - even when uninstalled years ago but not removed with the removal tool - although not usually intermittent
Just an idea - its more likely a hardware issue

so have you had a security suite like Norton , mcafee etc on the PC ever in the past

2xg, I use my m/b (ASUS M4A88TV-V) standard, which is a Realtek PCIe GBE family controller. Driver is up to date. Network cards are indeed pretty inexpensive, think getting a new one for an expansion slot might help?

etaf - I use Comodo v 5.3. I have never used Norton or McAfee anything on my computer, because I so strongly dislike them and the problems they cause.

My browsers are back up on the desktop again. I rebooted later in the day, and it worked for some reason. No new steps were taken, however, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen again. Thanks for the help guys, we'll see what happens.
