I recently purchased a used emachine. It had a broadband modem? (card) in it. I put a dial-up modem in because I don't have broadband or dsl. It is giving me a message that there is a irq conflict. I had this problem before and Didn't know how to fix it. I guess there are settings that are set when a broadband connection is setup in a system, that must be reversed when you install dial-up? Irq settings are very confusing to me so if you have the answer please explain in simple terms.:4-dontkno

a 56k dial-up. I should say I understand irq's somewhat but I don't know how to correct them when more then one thing is accessing a single irq. Originally I left the existing modem (broadband) in the small slot and put the 56k modem in the larger slot (pci)? but it didn't recognize it at all and gave me a message concerning the broadband modem, sorry I can't remember what the message was. I attributed it to the fact that it wasn't operable. So are you saying that if I am sure that my 56k modem is working properly that it should work? I am sure that it is a working modem. That wouldnt explain the irq conflict warning when I am powering up. I did check the bios and it has irq settings but I have no idea what I should change them to so I didn't mess with them. What is the very smaller slot beside the pci slot for? That is where the broadband modem was plugged in.

It is a smart link 56k modem I don't see a model # on the paper work
