Good morning everyone. I hope there is someone that can help me out.

I recently just bought a PC off of a friend, but it didn't have a hard drive in it. That's fine. My dad had an extra one that he had slaved on his PC. The hard drive that he gave me was an 80G Maxtor. I put the jumper back on, plugged the cables into it, and turned the PC on. The Problem occurs when i try to boot up. I get the black screen that asked if i want to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, last known good configuration, or normally(picture attatched). When i select one of the options, the PC "thinks" for a moment and then freezes. I've tried repositioning the jumper, and re-connecting the cables. Everything looks to be connected correctly. Both my dad and myself are out if ideas. If anyone out there has an idea of what might be wrong, please let me know.

hmmmm you might need to fix the master boot record. if you have your windows xp cd, boot up with it. first though you will need to go into the bios and change first boot device to "cdrom". save settings and then exit the bios.

then the computer should boot to the windows xp cd. then on the main menu choose repair. then the computer will take you to a black screen and ask you for admin password. if you dont have one, simply hit enter to skip the process.

then on C: type in "fixboot" or "fixmbr" either one is fine. it should only take a second and then reboot the computer afterwards. boot into windows and see if this helps solve your problem.

Thanks alot. I'll give the boot record fix a shot. If that doesn't work, then it looks like i'll have to reformat. I figured I'd have to do that. Thanks for the help
