In windows XP, after booting up and the welcome screen, many applications would freeze on startup.

After the desktop loads, some applications such as "connect to internet", internet explorer etc. would not load.

Only after a few minutes then they would be able to load and become activr, togethwr with my antivirus program.

Is there any way to quicken this?

I am using windows XP Home Edition.

It would help to know what kind of Internet connection you have, since it seems to be a connection issue.

Perhaps his computer is a 286...

For faster boots without having any information about your system, all I can recommend is hitting Start, Run, msconfig. Look at all of your startup items and uncheck the programs you don't need to have automatically booting up with your computer. The best list to see if you need bootup programs or not is here:
