:idea:My Toshiba Satellite laptop is running Win XP/SP3 with latest patches applied but it no longer boots properly.

(1)The desktop icons appear but there is nothing on task bar in the lower right hand corner.
(2)The "disk activity" lite flickers occasionally but the Task Manager usually cannot be launched (it launched once but then stopped responding).
(3) With the cursor over the Start button an hourglass appears
(4) Linux Ubuntu works well in "live mode" (bootable CD) and even allows access to at least one Win data file.
(5) Last Known Good config doesn't help
(6) Safe Mode can be loaded but will not allow 'SFC /scannow' to check system files

What else can i try before reloading the OS ? Thanx.

GOOD NEWS - "CLEAN STARTUP" WORKS !! However your post mentions 'Safe Mode' but the doct (KB331796) does not. Plz advise if Safe Mode is required for this fix.

There were 3 services previously selected (including M/S Automatic Trouble-Shooting and Avast A/V). I'd like to restore the deleted services but avoid this situation again. Any suggestions ?

Also earlier today i tried 'Recovery Console' functions -
(1) CHKDSK /r
(2) FIXBOOT
(3) FIXMBR

changes were made to the HD as a result - how can i determine data loss (if any) ?

Thanx for your help.

Hi

It doesn't matter if you are in safe or normal mode. I just presumed it would be easier in safe mode since you said safe mode is working. Therefore if you have done the clean boot procedure in normal mode that is perfectly okay.

Using MSConfig, put the services/startup items back one at a time (rebooting in between) until you find the service or startup item causing your "freezing" issue.
If you find it is a 3rd party program (like Avast) then uninstall the program and reinstall it.

The 3 functions you ran in recovery console should not have caused data loss. If there was a problem with your hard drive and chkdsk repaired it then there is a small chance a file or two got damaged and had to be repaired.
