Good Morning!
I have a Dell Demension 4700 which was working fine and just recently starting having a blue screen of death pop-up, then I realized it only occurred when I was running Windows Update. It trys to install IE7 along with a bunch of other hotfixes and it goes to the blue screen with the following codes.

0X0000008E (0XC0000005, 0XEE940928, 0XECBFAA28, 0X00000000)


Can anyone assist me if figuring this problem out??

Does the BSOD only come from running Windows Update, or does it occur (every time) on boot ?

Did anything else (besides running Update) "change" prior to the problem (new hardware/software, etc...) ?

The BSOD only occurs when attempting to run Windows Update. No changes have been made to the system Hardware or Software... I've run Ad-aware, Spybot and Regseeker to help with this issue and it cleaned up ALOT of stuff and helped with making the PC run better, but as soon as I run Windows Update it starts then crashes with the BSOD. So for now I've turned off automatic updates until I can figure this out. HELP!!

Do not install IE7 from Windows Update, take that one out of the option and try installing the other updates.

I've no idea why but till this day, one of my systems cannot run Windows Updates or it will basically freeze and get BSoD's too. Shutdown will take a painful 30minutes and explorer.exe will probably crash a few times prior. I have it totally disabled and update everything manually myself (get to learn a little about it too) and this way the system works perfectly! I've seen over a few hundred cases of this too. Its obviously conflicting in my PC with a driver/service.

Anyway, as to your case, follow the advice given and let us know what happens subsequently.

I've already tried removing IE7 and running the remaining hotfixes and it still crashes with the BSOD... Is there any sort of utility I can run to determine what's causing the issues? Any other ideas?

Start>run>chkdsk /f and hit "Yes" for it to run on reboot.

I ran the CHKDSK /F and still have the problem! What's next?

Start>Run>sfc /scannow & have the XP disk ready.

Also, after that, if it doesn't work out shut down the Windows Update. If it really is just that it will be resolved. Do that by:

Start > Run: type wuaucpl.cpl, hit Enter

Stop it from there.

Then in the runbox like above, type services.msc and hit Enter
Look for Automatic Updates on the right.
Right-click and choose Properties
Put it Start as Manual
Stop the service

Restart the computer.

I have known it to cause some issues in the past year with users and this way you'll be bale to make sure if it really is that or something other.

OK I ran the command suggested and I think It must be related to the DLL cache ..since I ran the sfc /scannow it asked me for the cd which I put in and it states my CD is the wrong one. I have XP pro with service pack 1a. So it could not find the DLLS needed for SP2. It would ask me to skip the file which I would do and then it did that at least 50 or so times.... Is there any way to get the DLLS... it did not show me which DLLs i needed. It kept having me cancel out of the it but the bar continued on... and finally i just quit out of it... HELP!

Re-register these files:

1. Click Start, click Run, type: cmd and press Enter.
2. Run the following commands pressing enter after each one:

Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Regsvr32 wuapi.dll
Regsvr32 wucltui.dll
Regsvr32 wups.dll
Regsvr32 wuweb.dll
Regsvr32 qmgr.dll
Regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll

After running each command, we will receive a message stating "Succeeded".


In your registry editor go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ WindowsUpdate \ AU. In the right pane, delete two values: AUOptions and NoAutoUpdate.

Now go to this location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ WindowsUpdate. In the right pane, delete this value: DisableWindowsUpdateAccess.

AFAIK thats used to cure errors received when Windows Update is trying to download, because the necessary files are not registered. It shouldn't cause a BSoD though. The 0x8E is linked to hardware, mostly RAM problems.

Still its very worthy of a try.

If after that you turn on Automatic Updates and you still get BSoD's, then try all this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903251

OK I've tried everything you've asked registering the DLL's and I still got the BSOD.. The registry entries were not in my registry. I also tried Kalim's solution and that did not work either... I tried installing 1 hotfix from Microsoft's website manually which I downloaded and as soon as I execute the EXE it BSOD. I even updated the FLASH bios on the PC to DELL's newest version for the PC and I still get the BSOD.. any other suggestions??

I would run windows driver verifier tool to make sure and get some accuracy.

*Close all applications.
*Start>Run> type: verifier.exe and hit Enter
*You're running this Driver Verifier utility for XP which has options shown as HERE
*Create Standard Settings>and choose "Automatically select all drivers installed on this computer"
*Proceed and see what it lists.
*If there's something wrong with a driver causing BSoD's, it'll usually give you another BSoD with the driver name included or show it: i.e. xxxxxx.sys
*Make a note of that.

See how that goes.

OK I ran verifier.exe and it asked me to reboot for the changes to take effect. After I rebooted the system started to loop on the boot and it finally stopped and said that windows had a problem and gave me the option to start in safe mode... I chose lsat known good config and I was able to get back to be able to logon again... Any other suggestions?

I haven't heard back from anyone for a couple of days on this problem and still cannot get Windows Update to work.... Should I be calling Microsoft at this point? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank You!!

Sorry about this. :sad: Didn't see it as it had been deleted from my subscriptions during cleanup.

If it rebooted and keeps rebooting it means you have a driver issue. You're OK for now as long as you chose LKGC.

When you get the next BSoD, in order to get details please do the following:

Go to start | search (type in) .dmp
Note the location of your .dmp files.
If there are no .dmp files then Search for: minidump
Remember this location and the path that leads to it.

(OR my way is Goto C:\WINDOWS and then search for Minidump and if it has files in it)

Then:

1) Download and install the Debugging Tool from Microsoft

All you need do is download and install this. Make no attempt to start or run it.

2) Download and install this debugwiz


This is a DOS based batch file that will command the above Microsoft Tools.

3) Open the Wiz & Browse to, or paste in the path to, your .dmp file.

4) After the wiz creates a Text document attach it back to this thread.
