Black Screen

706 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Coolfreak
I have the black screen and I can't boot up into anything. It says it is in safe mode but I can't see anything on the desktop. I re-installed the original version of XP I had and still nothing. What else can I try.

When you say you reinstalled the original version of XP - what exactly do you mean? Did you do a reinstall or a format and install on the hard drive?

Where does it say you are in safe mode? Do you see the POST screen (Usually says the brand of your computer before it boots into any Operating System)?
I read on another site that I needed to reinstall my Windows XP professional including service pack 1a and it would overwrite my corrupted files and I could just update once I got it fixed. When I try and boot up with any of the safe mode options or to the last known good configuration it takes me to a black screen with a white cursor in the middle of the screen that I can move around. It says in all 4 corners safe mode and the top says microsoft (R) windows xp(R) (build 2600.xpsp1.020828-1920:service pack 1). When I am booting up I see the Dell page then I see the Windows XP professional page then it goes to all black with the cursor.
You need to do a repair install of XP, most likely. It seems like your explorer.exe file is either missing or corrupt.

See if this helps.
