Black Screen and active mouse

OK, First off, let me start by saying that I dual-boot my system, a 60GB partition for linux and a 500gb partition for windows (and my games). Yesterday, I spent several hours in linux trying to get a windows game (lotro) to work in linux. I almost got it to work, still needs some more effort tho. But that's not why I am writing this. When I was done and wanted to actually just play the game, I rebooted back into windows and immediately noticed that I had no sound. While this inof itself isn't a big issue since I play the game w/ minimal sounds, I figured, what the hell, I'll play anyway and deal with it tomorrow. No Dice, still had no sound, reinstalled drivers from mobo manufacture, still no sound. Now this is where I bust out the big guns, roll back to the earliest point in last week I can (4/28 for my system). Restore goes fine, reboot and wham! Black Screen with a mouse.

I tried a three-finger salute, nothing, ctrl+shift+esc for taskman, nothing, I can trigger sticky keys tho! Fat lot that does me. I get this screen now in Normal mode, Safe Mode, Last known good configuration, default vga driver, safe mode w/ cmd prompt (btw I get no cmd-prmpt.) At this point, I'm about to just reboot back into linux, copy what I can off to other drives and reinstall again, but I'd like to see if there are any other options left to me first.

About the only reliable fix for Black Screen errors is System Restore. Beyond that, it's an exercise in futility - trying to find the registry entry that's causing it (or the bad driver, or the Windows update, etc).

At work, if System Restore doesn't fix it - we backup, wipe and restore.
