At times manufacturer's will release BIOS updates which clear up known issues with the specific board or ones which open up new functionality, usually in the form of support for new processors.

A BIOS update should only be attempted if the update directly addresses an issue which you are experiencing or functionality which you require. Even if you do everything correct, there are still many things which may go wrong, any one of which may render your motherboard permanently unuseable.

Unless you are having problems and the bios update will specifically fix the problem, there is absolutely no reason to update the bios. You take the chance of creating a door stop anytime you update the bios.

One thing - if you have an oem computer, it is best to get the bios update from the computer manufacturer and not from the motherboard manufacturer.

Rule of thumb for Bios...if it's not broke...don't fix it.
