So what is it

theres all these manufacturers... who im sure all make great drives
but are there any prefered driver mfgs?

in my life of building machines, i cant narrow it down to one or two.
ive had all of the mfgs out and those who have gone bust...
and ive had problems with atleast one drive per mfg.

at the moment, ive narrowed it down to WD and seagate

just wondering what your views are

I doubt you'll find a clear winner in this race. From time to time, you'll have failures with any of the name brands, the nature of the beast.

Are you going with PATA or SATA drives?

Whatever you choose, get one with the 8MB buffer. These have great performance!

These are my favorite drives, and are quite good:
Western Digital Raptor (two in RAID 0 configuration)
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9

I got tired of my old Western Digital drives dying on me, so I switched to Maxtor. Maxtor drives have been very good to me, and that's all I buy at the moment. Never tried a Seagate since their performance lags behind the other two manufacturers in the reviews I've read.

I avoid Seagte and IBM

Seagate hasn't been the same since Connor took them over in 97 ... IBM has passed the name over to Hitachi, and they have the absolute worst jumper config in the HDD world ...

Western Digitial with 8MB cache and Maxtor are great, plus I have had no RMA issues with either.
