What is the best substance which can be found around the house, for cleaning monitors safely?

I have both a glossy laptop screen as well as a matte TV screen which are both getting pretty dirty. I did used to use some cheap screen cleaning wipes but being such a cheap product, they dried up quickly and therefore as I do not get to use the majority in the pack, can get expensive.

Is there anything lying around a general household which can clean these screens (Either both of them or a different substance fro reach type of screen)?

I use clean piece of old t-shirt soaked in hot water to clean and a coffee filter to wipe dry.

I just use Windex and a microfiber rag/towel.
A very bad idea. Ammonia (active ingredient in Windex) may not destroy the LCD but it will remove the anti-glare and other coatings.

Dust the surface of your monitor with a dry soft cloth. If necessary, dampen the cloth with plain tap water; let the water stand in bowl for an hour if your municipality chlorinates. To remove fingerprints, add a few drops of plain white vinegar.

Really? Even if I spray the Windex onto the microfiber first and not the monitor? Its not like I clean it as if it was a Window.

Same thing Masterchiefxx17. The chemical is still making contact with the screen.
