There was a bad thunderstorm in my area and I lost power. When the power came back on my PC no longer detected an ethernet connection but WiFi connection on my laptop was fine. I figured my PC's card got fried during the storm. I don't know a heck of a lot but I tried all 4 slots and still no connection and I also swapped 3 different ethernet cables and swapped routers. My current router detected no ethernet connection at all, the older router detected it but had limited connectivity.

My PC is custom built and is only a few weeks old but they had installed XP on it and I was due to bring it back for a Windows 7 upgrade anyway so I took it back to the store last night. My PC connected fine through an ethernet cable at the store and they checked everything out and said my card was not fried. I saw that it worked fine in the store myself, I watched the tech check it all out before I took it back home this morning.

The PC still doesn't connect via ethernet, but the laptop connects with it no problem, so I'm really scratching my head. I'm on my PC right now and I'm connected through a wireless adapter, but I'd really like my ethernet to do what it's supposed to do.

So it doesn't appear to be a ruined network adapter and it doesn't appear to be a router or cable problem, so I don't know what to look for now.

I know the thunderstorm did something but I just don't know what, could it in fact be my router? The old router I swapped out doesn't work that great but I was able to run it long enough to test out the connection.

If there's any additional details I need to provide let me know.

just because the wireless works does not mean the router works. Sounds like the lan side of the router got toasted. Get a different router.

whatever you do don't screw with your pc. that is not where the issue is but you could make it that way.

have you tried connecting your laptop to the router via an etherent cable and see if that works on any of the LAN connections on the router

if the laptop does not work
then i would power cycle all the devices

------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to power cycle

“power cycle” process to reboot or reset the modem/router
  • Switch off all the devices modem, router and computers also unplug their power cables.
  • Wait at least 30 seconds.
  • Plug the power cords back in, but don’t switch them on.
  • First turn on the modem and then wait for it to settle - all lights to become stable.
  • Next switch on the router (if a seperate device ) and the allow the lights to become stabile.
  • Now turn on your computer, You should now be able to access the Internet.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

if that also does not work - make a note of any router settings and reset to factory condition

if it does work - post back an ipconfig /all from the laptop connected by cable

Yes the laptop worked fine when I plugged it into the ethernet at home, and the PC checked out fine while it was plugged into the ethernet at the shop this morning. So I'm pretty confused as to what's going on.

Edit: I've also reset the router quite a few times and I get the same result.

can we see an ipconfig /all from the laptop connected by cable
and the same for the desktop when connected by cable

------------------------------------------------------------------------
{ipconfig /all}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

I assume you are using the same cable and that you powercycle again with the desktop connected

i'm lost for ideas now ......

in summary
Ethernet Port on router works with Laptop
Ethernet Port on router does NOT works with desktop - with same cable and port on router
desktop Ethernet ports works fine at shop
desktop wireless connection works fine

the fact it works all OK at the shop but not at home is quote "Baffling"

Try safemode with networking
keep tapping F8 as the PC starts a menu appears choose - safemode with networking - see if that will connect now

Ok, I'll give that a try, anything is worth a shot. It is definitely a weird situation. I thought for sure it was a problem with my PC but the tech guy actually showed me 3 times that it wasn't, once last night when I dropped it off and twice before I left the shop. I thought he was trying to get out of replacing anything because like I said, it's only a few weeks old and I'm under warranty for another two years, haha. I'll report back :)

Edit: Yeah both my routers aren't the greatest, my old one is a DLink and it doesn't really stay on anymore so I couldn't do much testing with that, but it showed limited connection. My current router is from my ISP and even prior to the thunderstorms I was having some issues. It was dropping out several times a day for probably the past month. It's a Xavi 7968 from Telefonica, I'm kind of embarassed to admit that, but yeah.

These things can happen, just unpredictable, all we can do is find a resolution.

Also, make sure to get a good UPS (Uninterraptable Power Supply), I use Cyber Power for Home and Business use as good as APC then plug in your important electronic devices.

Well that was interesting. I tried to go into Safe Mode andit didn't give me the option to enter with a connection, my only choices were to enter normally or check for errors. So I let it fix the errors and got stuck with the lovely black screen and cursor. I went back into safe mode and got the option for safe mode with connection but it was still the same, I couldn't connect with the ethernet. I had to do a system restore to get rid of the black screen and cursor issue. I'm so frustrated with everything, my old PC was great but it just wore out and was not worth fixing.

I used to have a UPS but that died out just before my PC did and I just didn't really have the funds to replace it, I'm kicking myself in the behind now, it probably would have saved me all this hassle.

I am at a loss, I guess I'll pick up a new router and see if that does the trick.
