Bad Computer?

I have this Dell Latitude 600 laptop, It works for about 30 minutes and then freezes...It has win98 on it freshly installed....I have tried reinstalling the OS and it still freezes, now it freezes about every 15 minutes....can't find anybody else to help me with this problem...When I run diagnostics on it it tells me that SMBIOS -Environment Inf.:FAIL with a status:Failed status Code:DOS DDG-D 020 026:FAIL
then it says Unable to access device state.SMI handler returned an error while trying to retrieve the device state... Device number:1 Description:CPU Internal Temperature......Does this mean I need a new fan? Please help...

Might be a heat issue as you are thinking. Would you be able to open it and clean the fan ?

how old is this laptop ?

try going to a working computer and download memtest86 from www.majorgeeks.com and put it on a cd. then you will need to go into the bios of your laptop and change the first boot device there to cdrom so that your computer can boot to memtest86 at startup. save settings and exit the bios.

put the memtest86 cd you made into the cdrom and the computer should boot to memtest86. then the program will automatically begin testing your ram and see if there are any errors. make sure to let memtest86 run for at least 10passes.
