Is there a way to convert a fairly large .avi file and format it to play on a standard DVD Player?

i take it this is a movie* and u are wanting to put it onto a dvd to play in a dvd player, there are plenty of programs out there that convert .avi onto a dvd and burn it, one of them is convert X to dvd which is a program u have to pay for but will convert the .avi file to the dvd and burn it for u
