I'm running AVG8 free on my xp SP3 machine and the icon in the system tray shows an updating error when the user interface is brought up saying "You may not be protected the connection failed". The Update manager seem not to be able to connect.

I suspect that AVG doesn't allow enough retries when attempting to update. Have had it happen a number of times on my own machine. Sometimes the server is busy - just try it again later. If all else fails go to the AVG website and manually download the update. There are instructions on the website to tell you how to do it.

Log on to AVG site and direct update seems to have solved the problem.
