AV/IS freeware suggestions

Hi, I currently have Kaspersky installed and have a number of issues with that package. I am now about to re-install Windows XP Pro on the PC (for other reasons). I would now like to avoid re-installing Kaspersky on this new installation and instead go for some good freeware that will cover antivirus and firewall requirements. I believe Microsoft Security Essentials is quite good but does not scan emails. It would be good to have a package that scans emails as well.
Can you give me a few suggestions please. I am hoping for something that has a small CPU footprint as well.

Microsoft Security Essentials also has one other drawback -- it does not include a firewall.
I criticise Microsoft for giving it that misleading name when it's just an antivirus application. They should have just called it Microsoft Antivirus.

If you want a free firewall/av package that you can trust, in my opinion there is only one. It's called Outpost Security Suite & the free version is here:
Outpost Security Suite FREE*— The first Free Complete Internet Security Suite

It's only rival is Comodo Internet Security but I personally found that to be too complicated for the average user & generated far too many pop-ups asking for permission: Firewall Antivirus Software Free Download from Comodo™
