Hello All!
I'm trying to help a neighbor fix there computer and I've run into some issues with it. They have a laptop running XP and is connected via wireless to their Gateway router by an older Dlink PCI card. The laptop mainly uses Earthlink's Total Access program to check email and web browsing.
The problem its having is with connecting to their router's wireless signal automatically. I will manually set up the connection and it will work fine for a while, but after a restart or a uncertain amount of time the connection is lost, and when I check the Network Connection preferences it no longer shows it. The problem first started occurring when I update the laptop to SP3, after some troubleshooting I saw that the Dlink card was not supported for SP3 and no drivers were released for it. So I removed SP3, but the problem is still persisting. I've tried uninstalling the driver, as well as rolling it back and updating it. Also reseting the router didn't provide any solutions.
I called Earthlink who said it was a Gateway problem and transfered me, but Gateway said it was a D-Link problem and transfered me, and D-Link gave me the address for their support page with drivers and said they couldn't do more with out charging.
My suspicion right now is that the problem is being caused by Earthlinks program trying to connect itself. In the Network Settings I've seen a preference called Earthlink Managing Connections. In addition to this, the city I'm located in has recently installed a city wide wireless network. The network is open, but once connected you have to sign in on their login page. My guess is that the Total Access program doesn't the Gateway router right away and tries connecting to the city wireless. But it can't do the manual login so the connection fails.
Does anyone have any experience with a problem like this and could offer some advice? Any sort of tips or hints would be great, at this point I'm sort of stuck and don't know what to try next. If you need more details let me know.
Thanks!
