Automatic Login

Fellow Techs,

When I turned on my computer the other day instead of going to the Welcome Screen (for me to type in my password for the Administrator Account) a message briefly appeared and then disappeared and then my computer was stuck on 'Windows is Starting Up.' It did this every time and the message flew by so fast that I couldn't see what it was saying.

I rebooted to Safe Mode and changed the settings in User Accounts to not use the Welcome Screen but to do it old-fashion style (with the login prompt). I then was able to see the message in full:

Logon Message

The System could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case.
After clicking 'OK' I typed in my password and was able to login just fine. I assume that the computer is automatically trying to log me on, but is using an old password. How can I turn off this automatic logon and just let it prompt me to choose my account and password when I start up my computer?

Thanks MS Computing Team! :sayyes:

Take a look at this setting.

Start > run > control userpasswords2

Is the box checked that says Users must enter a username and password....

I was going to suggest the same thing...
Nope...

Any other ideas? :4-dontkno

should this be posted in a different forum?
control panel > user accounts > "change the way users log on and off" > make sure "Use Welcome Screen" is checked

If I use the Welcome Screen then the computer won't even finish booting!
I'll try bumping again to see if this catches anyone's eye...
Download and install TweakUI. Run the tool (it should be sitting in %systemroot%\system32\tweakui.exe) then click the plus next to Logon, and select Autologon. Make sure "Log on automatically at system startup" is unchecked. Hit apply, OK, and restart. Hopefully you should now have a working system.

Worked like a charm...I knew I could count on my fellow TSF techs to save the day!

Many thanks!
