I don't really know when this started since this is my brother's laptop but he says that the problem started like 2-3 months ago or so. The only sound that seems to work is the beep when the computer first turns on. When I go to sound and audio devices it says "No Audio device" and everything under the "Audio" tab is greyed out. When I go to manage and click audio codec properties, it says that it's functioning properly. Any ideas to make my sound work again? :sigh:

Xzeno,

Try going to the Microsoft Update website and using the Custom Update feature. MS will search the computer for available up dates to Windows Software, Critical Security Updates and Hardware.

I always let MS find the drivers first before googling for them myself.

well that didn't help, kept getting [Error number: 0x800703E3]. Also forgot to mention that the "Multimedia Audio controller" has an ! next to the icon. I've tried uninstalling it, rebooting, and try to let it install again but it always says it failed.

HI,
Can you go to the Device Manager and post any errors (yellow !).
What is the make and model of this computer?
Bill
The only yellow "!" is the multimedia audio device. When I go into properties, it says under Device status that the device is not installed. I've tried downloading the driver from the toshiba website and it says it installed properly but it still doesn't work.

Operating System-Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2
System Model- TOSHIBA Satellite L25 PSL2XU-02000F
System Serial Number: Y5086380W
Enclosure Type: Notebook
Processor a Main Circuit Board b
1.50 gigahertz Intel Celeron M
64 kilobyte primary memory cache
1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache Board: TOSHIBA Satellite L25
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: TOSHIBA V1.50 09/23/05

Edit:I also noticed that there's no Audio codec thing under Add/remove programs

Hi,
Is this the Audio Driver:
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...&selFamily=1073768663&selModel=1209125|PSL2XU
Selct you OS
Select Sound

You will also need the MS UAA Driver installed BEFORE the Audio Driver.

yes that's the audio driver, however after I downloaded the UAA driver and tried to install it, it stays on "Inspecting system configuration" for a long time (think it was 10-15 minutes before I canceled it). Is that normal?

I feel your pain. Try this...for some reason, these drivers never seem to fail even though they are never mentioned with certain systems. I had the exact same problem with a customers laptop. Same sound, grayed out screen--mirror image of your problems and observations.
download the Realtek HD Audio Drivers...install it...and see what happens. It has worked like a charm seemingly for audio drivers that don't want to work. Try it, download it, install it and RESTART YOUR COMPUTER...let me know what happens!

Hi,
See if the UAA driver is installed already.
You may find it under Add/Remove programs or under System Devices in the Device Manager: Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio.
Have you tried to manually install the Sound driver through the Device Manager?
Bill
the UAA driver isn't in the add/remove programs list. everytime I try to install it through device manager it says "an error occurred during the installation of the device"

@downtownpbrowne
that didn't help either :sigh:

Hi:wave:,
We going to get this working if it kills me:eek:.

I want you to uninstall All Sound drivers from Add/Remove Programs and in the Device Manager.

Then run this program to remove any traces of your sound drivers:
http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/
Reboot the computer

Install this MS UAA Driver:
http://geekswithblogs.net/lorint/archive/2006/06/11/81540.aspx
Scroll down the page Q888111 select XP SP2
Install and Reboot

Audio Driver:
Refine Search By: XP SP2..........Sound
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...&selFamily=1073768663&selModel=1209125|PSL2XU
The first one on the list Conexant Audio Driver for Windows XP (v6.14.10.0590 r2; 09-23-2005; 711K)

Try this one first! Then install the Modem. Test for your sound after the Modem is installed.
Install and Reboot

OR

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...1&PNid=14&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3
Use this one only if the one above fails to give you sound (after the Modem is installed)
Install and Reboot

Modem Driver:
Refine Search By: XP SP2...........Modem
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...&selFamily=1073768663&selModel=1209125|PSL2XU
First on the list
Install and Reboot

On many Toshiba laptops the sound does not work unless the modem is working. They are tied in together.

Let me know how you make out.

thanks, I appreciate it.
well I uninstalled the sound drivers I found under add/remove programs. and when I tried to run driversweeper, I checked the realtek-audio box and it gave me a "fire not found" message.
When I tried to run the MS UAA driver it was on "Inspecting system configuration" for like 10~15 minutes before I gave up and canceled it. Should I have waited a bit more or is it supposed to be faster?

looks like I got a bit ahead of myself. I forgot to remove 1 of the sound drivers from add/remove then the driversweeper worked. I left the MS UAA driver installing while I went to class and when I came back it said I successfully installed it. I installed the 1st audio driver and the modem and the sound still doesn't work. When I try to download the 2nd one, I check the "I accept the above " box and click on next and it keeps giving me the "Object moved to here" which is the same page as the first, so its pretty much just a circle.

Hi,
I am not sure, but did your brother reinstall/repair install of windows 2-3 months ago when he first had this issue?
In my experince and the problems you are having it is telling me that something is either corrupted in the OS (probably during a repair install or a reinstall of XP) or during the time this issue started (Virus, Spyware/Malware, using Registry cleaners etc).
Do you know if any of this has been done?
Bill
