First off hi :)

Well, I have this problem and it's very strange. I think it may have to do with att, but here it goes.

I have 2 computer I'm attempting to network (share files mostly). One laptop and one desktop, both of which are running on Win2k SP3. They are connected to a Netgear FS105 switch, which is then connected to the Motorola SB4200 cable modem.

1) Both computers can access the internet just fine. However, both computers cannot share files.

2) I unplug the cable connection, ipconfig /renew, and they can share again. However, if I plug the cable back in, return to #1.

Anyone know what this problem is and if there is a way to solve this?

Hi Horizon. Welcome.

From what I read, the Netgear is just a switch - no firewall or Network Address Translation. So, you are able to get two IP addresses from your ISP?

I would NOT recommend enabling file sharing on your two machines if they are directly connected to the internet. As I've recommended to others, this is begging to be hacked.

If you're going to file share, disconnect the internet connection and then do it.

Out of curiosity, if you disconnect your internet connection and release and renew the IP addresses, what addresses are you getting? 169.x.x.x?

Can you ping the two machines?

If you don't understand any part of this, feel free to ask.
