This card was acting up lately. Sometimes while surfing the web/playing games/just using explorer it would randomly spaz out and and the screen would go one color. Like the whole screen just turned o a pink color. I'd rebott and it would be fine. Then, the next day, it would do this again. Changing DVI ports didn't help.
I tried changing PCI-E ports and this seemed to help. But then one day it spazzed out again and after a reboot the display just went black.
I've cleaned it and replaced thermal paste.
Didn't help.
The fan spins normally.
I've got an older card in place now, so there's nothing wrong with the motherboard.
How can I fix it and what's wrong?

Asus P8P67 LE
Intel Core i5 2400 3.1GHz
Kingston Value RAM 2х2GB 1333MHz PC3-10600 DDR3
ATI Radeon HD 5870 (Now I'm running a Geforce 9800GT)
500W PSU

Test the card in another computer. That will confirm a card issue and not a PC issue.

Assuming the card is faulty, replace it.
Of course I've tested it in another computer before making a post here. Geez
And of course it's not an option to replace it, if it was I wouldn't be wasting my time here asking for ways to fix it.

However, it doesn't matter now as I've sold it. Thanks anyway :flowers:

You sold a malfunctioning video card? Can you explain that or am I reading this wrong?
Jesus christ, you guys, ugh. Yes I sold a broken card. I sold it as *BROKEN* for parts.

Aside from the HSF, there isn't much of anything user salvageable from a video card. And without schematics and proper test equipment (ie: at least an o-scope and volt meter), there is no way of properly testing and troubleshooting the card. If you had these tools and knowledge, you wouldn't be asking here. So I don't know exactly what you expected to hear.

And you didn't state that you tested the card in another computer. If you don't say it, we don't know that you did it. We NEVER assume anything. I've had people here asking for help because their speakers don't work, only to find out they aren't plugged in or powered on.

I will also add that a 5870 requires a 500w minimum power supply (w/ 40 amps on the 12volt rails). So unless you are running a top tier brand power supply, such as a Seasonic, the card likely wasn't getting enough power.

I wasn't expecting to get "official" answers.
I was looking for more folksy solutions. You know like the one where you cook the card in the oven. That kind of mad max stuff.
Except for that particular one though, because I've already cooked it and it didn't help.
Looking at HWMonitor I can see that everything is fine with both of my PSUs.

Sorry for immediately thinking bad...my bad. Jim does have a valid point though, what would anyone salvage except hsf though?
Don't ask me, man, I'm not the one who willingly bought a broken card. :flowers:

The oven trick tends to be a one-shot thing. It either works the first time and the card runs fine after, or it really 'cooks' the card for good.

As far as buying/selling a known bad card, I've done both. It isn't a problem as long as the status of the item is declared up front. At various times I've tossed ten bucks in the trash, or have turned it into two hundred by capitalizing on someone else's mistake.
