I now have my projector installed running at a input resolution of 1920x1085 this is one output from the 4850 card which has dual dvi connected outputs which claim to be independent resolutions ,but when I connect up a mini monitor (800x485 resolution) and apply this within the graphics card setup the monitor only displays the window scene (without the icons)??????

If you have it set to dual view then it extends the desktop to that monitor , which copies the wallpaper. If your looking for clone mode then both the projector and monitor need to support a common resolution between them.

Thanks for that, problem is though the projector's native resolution is as I said 1920 x 1085 which I believe goes far beyond the average PC Monitor.

Beyond an average monitor yes, however some old crt's could support it. If you need something on the projector it can be dragged back and forth between the two screens , but for the clone mode your looking for the monitor and projector need to share at least one resolution.
