I have a 500 watt PSU
Also, why does my fan run 100% all the time? I cant control it from CCC but i can hear it going 100%
Also, riva seems to be for nvidia only?

I am using riva tuner on my sons computer for his 4850 to control the fan speed. I have not used it to overclock it.

There seems to be issues with the new 10.6 drivers on some comuters..which version do you have?

What is the brand and model of the psu?

Found it. When i overclock, on the hardware monitoring, the speeds go up to the speeds i set it to, and then it does down again. So odd...
I guess its stuck to stock speeds? Take a look:

Blip. Dies again. :D
Also, I can't control the fan speeds >.<

625Mhz is the default clock speed that is used when you go into fullscreen gaming mode or run a 3D test. 500MHz is for desktop mode. It's a power-saving feature.

Your graphics temperature of 67C is very high for general desktop work. You would expect to see that kind of temp when playing a fullscreen game. This could be caused by a faulty GPU fan and/or a weak PSU.

Check the voltages and temperatures in BIOS, and see how much the temperature increases while gaming.

You need to tick the 'Enable Manual Fan Control' box and click the Apply button before using the fan speed slider.

Your screenshot shows the fan speed at 0%. Open the case and check the graphics fan.

What make/model is your 500W PSU?

If it's a low quality unit with a low efficiency rating and not enough +12V amps, you could damage the graphics card by increasing the clock speeds.

I wouldn't try overclocking until you get the fan working properly and the temperature down to about 40C, and even then don't overclock by more than about 10-15% whic will increase your games framerates by about 5fps max, so it's probably not worth it.

Thanks. You sound so proffessional ^^
I did the fan thing, I just cant control it for some reason
PSU is OCZ 500 Watt 18A across the 12 v rails
80+ certified
The PSU is really really cool, so i dont think thats it.
The fan on the graphics card is - err its spinning right now, i cant see it- but i think its a kalman or something
theres a heat coil around the fan too
I'm not gonna OC cause its minimal
I tried ocing already, at max i got it 750 GPU clock and 1040 mem clock so its not worth it to OC
I read that 4850 has really high temps, and the benchmarking guy said his was 60-something at idle, and 87 or something at full load
Right now, I've opened my case and at idle its 56-57 degrees and playing BBC2 is at around 70 degrees
So now, I just need to know why I can't control my fan, and how i can get the temp down :D

Your OCZ 500W PSU has two +12V rails, both providing 18A, giving a combined total of about 28A, taking efficiency into account. This is quite low for a PCIE card. ATI/AMD recommend 32A minimum, and we usually recommend 40A to be safe, so something like a Corsair 550W which has 41A on a single +12V rail would be more suitable.

I've got an HD4890, which is basically the same as your card, just a bit faster, and it idles at 40C and only reaches 70C at full load when running fullscreen games.

If you're getting 67C at idle with the case closed and 57C with the case open, make sure the front and rear case fans are spinning and positioned correctly. The front one should be low down and pulling in cool air, and the rear one should be near the top of the case and blowing out warm air, and there should be a clear airflow path between the two fans. It sounds like your case might have a ventilation problem.

When you increase the fan speed slider and click the Apply button in Catalyst, do you hear the fan getting louder? When you set it to 20% and click Apply, does the fan sound quieter or is there no change at all?

If you've tried using both Catalyst and RivaTuner to adjust the fan speed and neither of them have had any effect, uninstall the graphics driver and try this earlier version from May 2010 - Catalyst 10.5 - http://downloads.guru3d.com/ATI-Catalyst-10.5-WHQL-Windows-7-|-Vista-64-bit-download-2551.html

Reading the previous post it sounds like there is an aftermarket cooler on the gpu. hence the 0% fan speen sense it is more than likly connected to a molex pin. The cooler might not be seated properly.

I... Don't have any paste
When i got the card it had a heatsink and fan....
You can buy paste at radio shack. Artic silver is the best stuff and is about 10 bucks a tube. You just remove the heat sink wipe off the old paste and apply a small amount of new. Too much here is just as bad as none so be conservative. A small dab will work.

I am also having the same issues as Josh, but Ive tried the backdoor manual fan profile. as i have 10.6 my ATI 4850 runs hot idles around 80c but its also a visiontek single slot cooler it will peak at 100c. ive done Thermal paste with Arctic silver 5. only way to keep it nice and cool is to run the fan at approximately 45-55%. but as 10.6 will not let me control anything.

Please start your own thread next time Boofus or just watch this one. Thread jacking is somewhat rude. Have you tried reverting back to an older driver.
