bought and installed new pentium 4 2.8 and ASUS P4C800 Deluxe. attached my existing components and booted computer first time. system began finding new hardware, however i know that when it prompted me to find a driver i skipped a file for a couple of things thinking that i could perhaps run a setup from the motherboard disk to install the drivers. one of the files skipped was for 'PCI, PCI to PCI bridge'. the others i cant remember.

Now when i boot the computer it scans IDE drive and displays message:

'FASTRACK controller not installed, the BIOS could not be loaded'

or something to that effect.

Everything seems ok, and the windows 98 slash screen appears, then the hard drive begins to do something, and suddenly the computer reboots and the process repeats itself.

Is there anyway i can restore the motherboard BIOS, or whatever to the state where it will search for the new hardware again as it did the first time i switched it on??

Can anyone please help me with this problem?? i think i am in way over my head!!

Reinstall W98 right over itself. Boot to the W98 Boot Disk and choose CD-Rom support. After it gets to the A:> Prompt type E: Enter (Or whatever your CD letter has changed to) Insert the W98 CD and type setup...........Oh then Enter.........LOL

to be honest i think the problem occured when i skipped a couple of files when the system was trying to install 'PCI, PCI to PCI bridge controller' and stuff like that.

thanks anyway!!

OK I think I misinterpreted what you did here! Did you take your hard drive from another machine and just stick it in there with all the data from the old machine on it and hope that it would work OK?

ok, apologies speedo, the re-install has infact worked fine.
i did take the hard drive from another machine, and yes i was sort of expecting it to work, obviously not without a few problems.

so when i first re-intstalled windows as recommended by yourself, i think i just did an over the top install, without actually formatting the hard drive.

so after this i formatted the hard drive, plugged only minimal components into the motherboard(hard drive, graphics, cd rom)and then installed windows. this seems to have worked just fine, obviously there are a couple of teething problems, but as far as i can see its cool. only problem now is that i lost some data and i have to install more peripherals and compenents from my old PC, which will probably cause me no end of bother due to not having any system disks. oh well.

Thankyou very kindly for your help, much appreciated!!!

Asus P4C800 Deluxe

I have the same board as you and i know how to fix the problems that you are having if you e-mail me at [email protected] ill help you.
That messege you are getting is for the serial fast track ( Promise option) that your motherboard has every time i boot my machine it says the same thing but if it does not boot thats because you have to go in the setup and make sure that ide mode is selected not raid doing so will allow the machine to boot . but like i said if you e mail me ill will help you .
Also ASUS says that only windows xp should be installed with this motherboard.

P4C800 deluxe

First of all i dont like sarcastic or rude people you know who you are. I dont do this for them. The reason im here is because i get satisfaction when someone is happy because i helped them.
i didnt post a solution because i have a computer biz to run i didnt have time thats why i posted the e-mail.

Get rid of windows 98 you have an 800 fsb very fast machine. And ASUS Says that only Xp or higher Operating system should be installed with this motherboard its in the manual. Windows 98 get rid of it it can only read properly 512 mb of ram thats it if you give it more it will act crazy . Also the board you have has the ability to go up to 4 Gb of ram. much better xp also sees 4 Gb of memory max big difference. But i cant stress enough with this motherboard no 98 or 98 se. And if you think that you left some stuff out off the disk put it back in and reinstall it that simple.

First you have to go into the setup you can do this by hitting the del key over and over while the machine is going through post at start up. Start pushing the del key when you see the asus screen keep pushing it until the setup comes up. again once there go to the advanced tab. And make sure that where it says operating mode its says ide instead of raid this will allow the machine to boot. The message that you are getting is supposed to be there, (but you can disable it in the setup its in the manual )its for the fast track promise option that comes with this motherboard. Mine does the same thing . As for the bios you can update it from asus directly and easily with a little program called ASUS EZ FLASH which is on your board disk. You can also reset your bios with the version that is on your board disk. Just by booting the computer with the board disk that came with your motherboard.
