I have been given my friends laptop to look at, its an Asus K53e. The laptop boots, you can see the asus logo come up, but then you get a black screen. The cursor blinks a few times, but then it goes complete black. I can also see that the screen is glowing and i can also get into bios.
I have tried the following
1) Connected to external monitor, but still the same
2) reseated the ram

What could i try next, is this a hardware or software problem?

Hello,

While in the BIOS check to see if the hard drive is detected properly.

Remove the hard drive and attempt to boot the laptop. Do you get any display or error on the screen?

Remove the optical drive and test.

I checked bios and hard drive is detected. If i remove the hard drive it says 'insert boot media.
I tried booting from a recovery cd and its booting fine onto that cd. So its a Windows 7 problem. Is windows 7 repairable or should i just reinstall windows.

The hard disk is not recognised in the recovery. So i have taken the hard disk out and put it into an external hard disk enclosure. I can see the primary partition and recovery partition. How could i boot into recovery or should i run chkdsk first
