asrock pro 3 motherboard vs power supply issue

1095 Views 7 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  saj1011
Hello,

i recently acquired an asrock pro 3 for a project budget build for a friend and have a query...

Basically, the atx 12v interface for the board has 8 pin holes, however my power supply has a 6+4, so

if i only connect the 6 to the 8 holes will it work?
if i connect 8 and have two pins overhanging will that work?
do i need to buy and adapter for 6 to 8 or 10 to 8?

thanks

Can you post a pic of the cable you have? 12v cables should be 4 x 4 or 8 pins together, I've never seen one with 6 pins. 6 pin is usually PCI-Express.
Do either cable ends have any writing on them to indicate what they are for. The 4 pin is most likely for 12v power as older motherboards only required the 4 pin power.
The 6 pin is most likely for PCI-express.

If you look at page 29 of the manual they indicate that a single 4 pin can be used and they show which set of pins you should connect the cable to. Typically the 8 pin is only required for CPUs that draw a lot of power.
