Hello,

I am having trouble with 2 of my 3 pci slots on my motherboard. If I plug my wireless adapter into the first pci slot, the device works without any problem. If I plug it into the 2nd or 3rd pci slot however, the device is detected in windows, it installs properly, the device manager says its installed and working properly, but I don't have an internet connection and when I troubleshoot the device, it says their is a hardware problem.

I've recently been making some hardware changes, new graphics card, new power supply, new bluray player and so on, so I'm worried that somewhere along the line I've caused some damage, but since the devices are recognized and say they are working properly in the device manager, and since it works in one of the 3 pci slots, I'm not sure what to make of this.

I have an ASUS Amberine motherboard. The specs are here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...name=c00496044

Thanks for any input.

The network card shows in the device manager when it is in either of the 2 slots that don;t seem to work. Under device status it also says "This device is working properly".

I'm really scratching my head on this one... I'm inclined to think its not the motherboard since it shows in the device manager, but I'm really stuck on where to go from here.

I also cleared the cmos and took out the motherboard battery for a while in case it was a bios related issue.

I just tried the following:

Took out all PCI and PCIe cards (used the onboard graphics).
Plugged in the network card to PCI slot one. Worked without problems.
Uninstalled the device in device manager.
Took the card out and plugged it into PCI slot 2.
Windows recognized new device and "installed successfully" on reboot.
Device manager says device working properly
When I troubleshoot using the "windows network diagnostics" it says "There might be a problem with the driver"

Update:

I uninstalled from the ports where it wasnt working. (device manager -> uninstall)

I then plugged it into the first pci slot where it was working before, it reinstalled on startup and now I have the same problem in the pci slot that used to work.

I'm thinking my pci slots are ok and it's a driver / wireless card issue. (or I damaged the first pci slot as well but hopefully not and I think unlikley)

The device manager says installed and working properly. The back of the card (netgear wg311t) have power and activity lights that flash in alternation. I've been searching in the netgear manual and tech support and can't seem to find an answer.

Any thoughts?

I get the same problem if i remove my wireless usb adapter with windows 7. sometimes i have to manually install the driver even though windows recognizes the device and shows it installed properly. You might want to run the driver disk for the card after you have it in the slot where it's gonna stay and see if that works. If you dont have the disk download the driver/software intall from netgear.

Problem Solved:

Turned out to be a combination of 2 problems:

Windows 7 automatic install did not install with a compatible driver. Had to go to device manager and update the driver with windows 7 driver downloaded from linksys.

The other trick is when updating the driver in Device manager -> Properties (for network card) -> Driver Tab -> Update Driver -> Browse Computer -> ... Did not work when clicked browse and selected the folder with the driver. Instead -> "let me pick from list of drivers on my computer" and select the existing driver and update that with the downloaded drivers.

Second -> Kaspersky (aarrrg...should have thought of that!!) Under network connections, properties for the network card -> make sure kaspersky is unchecked under "used the following items". Kaspersky was not allowing the device to be enabled.

Ended Up Calling linksys about this. Apparently this is a common problem. Kaspersky, windows 7, and their PCI cards are not playing nice.

Thanks to all for the input. So happy my PCI slots are not damaged and its not time for a new motherboard!!!
