Hi everyone :)

I recently bought a PS3 Slim, and I'm sharing the internet connection on my laptop with the game console; so I had to turn the LAN Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on... everything is working fine, I simply hooked the Ethernet cable up to my PS3 from the port on my laptop.

My questions is: The only way I was able to successful enable ICS and get the PS3 online, was to totally turn off my Windows Firewall (I also uninstalled Zone Alarm Firewall I was using, because I figured Windows Firewall was fine). IS THERE ANY WAY to keep the Firewall on, to avoid intrusion or viruses/attacks, while I am sharing the internet with my PS3... or is this simply something I'm going to have to live with?

OH - ALSO real quick... I almost went CRAZY last night, because I had all the setting correct for Wireless ICS from my laptop (making my laptop a hotspot) and the wireless network I set up even showed on my HTC Touch Pro 2 phone, and my Acer Netbook - but neither WOULD NOT actually allow internet access (even though both devices said I was "connected with excellent range"); was that because at that point in time I STILL HAD THE FIREWALL TURNED ON? Thanks!!!!

Hello,

From Control Panel's Windows Firewall, you may leave the firewall ON, you may go to Exceptions tab and add the Programs and Services, also the Add the Port No. See if this helps.

I tried going to the program exceptions... but didn't know what to select, since there was no Playstation 3 program to choose. As far as port number, I'm unsure of how to determine what port-number I am using; does it stay the same at all times so once I set it I won't have to reconfigure every time I turn the PS3 or my laptop off and then back on?

For the Firewall exception, what am I looking for in order to still share internet with peripherals through the hardwired LAN? Thanks! :)

Let us open up Ports in your firewall.

From Exceptions tab, click on Add Port, and do this in order:

Name: 5223-PS3
Port No: 5223 then click ok
TCP and do one for UDP

To Add another one, do same Procedure and this time add Port No: 3478-3479
also 3659-3660

You'll have to do each one for TCP and UDP.
Also, make sure that Files and Printer sharing are enabled and so with some of your Programs that you need to add for Firewall Exceptions.

Please update.

Thanks a lot!

I created exceptions one-by-one for 5223, 3478, 3479, 3659, and 3660 in that order per your directions and made sure to create 2 exceptions each: one for TCP, and repeated same process choosing UDP.

I also made sure File & Printer Sharing was enabled.

Any next steps?

Now, the moment of truth....try your PS3 games.

Pls. let me know.
Hi, ok I bought Modern Warfare 2 last night and stayed up to 4am playing it; but I wanted to report back and let you know the ICS wasn't working for some reason.

I turned the firewall on after doing all those exceptions you walked me through, and then thought maybe something wasn't right, so I turned the firewall completely off and restarted the PS3 and my Laptop; but no luck.

I tried selecting "share" with each of the LAN icons in my Network Settings to see if I would simply 'get lucky' and end up connecting on the PS3, but nothing seemed to work because I kept getting the error message: "ICS cannot be Enabled, because the IP is already assigned," bla bla bla, it was all Latin to me, lol!

Are there any steps, aside from a Factory Reset, that I can do troubleshooting to get the settings where they need to be so I can keep sharing the internet with my PS3 through my laptop's Ethernet port? I had it working for almost 2 weeks, and tonight when I was pumped up to get online for MW2, nothing :( I ran the PS3 internet connection program twice, but it said "Timed out during DNS or IP." Thanks :)

Okay, if you don't want to do a reset (I do prefer this btw), be prepared for more troubleshooting and some frustrations involved. It's good for you to learn these things anyway.

For this "ICS cannot be Enabled, because the IP is already assigned" meaning that there is another network adapter in the system that is configured with the same address.

On all computers in your home network, you will have to do this. Click on Start => run and type the word cmd on the blank field. From the black screen, type the word ipconfig /all and press enter. Right click on the black screen choose Select All and Paste the results here if you wish to. You don't need too, if you can figure out which IP is conflicting.

and you may do an ipconfig release/renew on all computers as well and see if they will assign a diff IP address. From the command prompt type the word ipconfig /release press enter. Then type another one which is ipconfig /renew and press enter.

If the above didn't work, you may do a Power Cycle of your Modem and Router. Do not re-install Zone Alarm.

THANK YOU soooo much! :)

I decided to do a destructive recovery (full factory reset) to my laptop tonight (in about 10 minutes) just to circumvent any mistakes or spider-webs of troubleshooting. I usually do a 'hard reset' once a month, because I have gotten so fast at it, and keep a folder of programs and updates to install after a reset on an external HDD - so its no biggy. It keeps my laptop running like brand new!

I need to find a good solid and stable program that creates a bootable image of my system after I do a Recovery-Reset and get it exactly how I want it (remove HP bloatware, uninstall unwanted programs, install SP3 and other Windows Updates) and then have that on file so I can simply select it and in a click take my computer back to optimal-perfect settings without having to reformat all the time!

Whoa thanks! I was reading about this and one other well known program, almost the same price; and it seems like it does everything I am wanting. Thank you for the discounted link!

I hope I explained what I was looking to do, basically get my laptop to EXACTLY how I want it (uninstall crapware, install my favorite programs, and do a complete windows update) before running the slightest risk of a virus, and then set THAT complete identical image of my computer so I could on-demand choose to revert my computer to that condition at any point in time without using the laborious time-draining HP Recovery Management software. Is that what this could be used for, or not exactly? :)

That's exactly what I do with any machine I deal with here. I configure it all install all the Windows updates, remove all the crapware, install all the stuff I want it to have, and then do an image backup with Acronis True Image.

PC Decrapifier is really useful for removing all the junk most manufacturers put on their machines. This will allow you to remove all the trialware, etc. before moving on.

NiNite is a slick app for selectively installing a bunch of free applications, obviously you choose the ones you want to install. Saves a lot of time during setup.

Man, that is AWESOME if you to reply and give me those links, they are new programs to me so it makes it even better - I'll put them to good use! This place is great :)

Here is a list (since I just did a hard reset last night, I made out a hand written list) of my favorite programs as well as my process for reformatting my laptop (favorite freeware is in BLUE below - would ninite support these installs?):

- Reformat (Destructive)
- Change Power Settings (When lid closes, time until standby, power button)
- Change Mouse Settings (snap-to, speed)
- Uninstall all Bloatware & Trials (ESPN, Office, Vongo, Norton, and MUCH more) *Edit: Download and use "PC Decrapifier"
- Install Windows XP SP3 from HDD
- Install Active Sync 4.5 (to prepare laptop to connect to internet from cell)
- Install Office 2010 beta
- Install HP Printer & Photo-smart Premier software
- Install Firefox 3.6 beta just released (and make default browser)
- Install AVG 9 + CC Cleaner (run updates from toolbar)
- Install: WinRar, Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, Primo PDF, DVDfab, IMGburn, Irfanview, Download Accelerator Plus (DAP), SyncBack, VLC Media Player, Tech Tracker Cnet Edit: *Use NiNite for all listed programs aside from DVDfab/PrimoPDF and TechTracker
- Run Microsoft Update
- Turn on Automatic Updates

DONE! :)

Any additional thoughts or great useful freeware's out there you'd recommend? THANKS...

EDIT: Whoa... I am reading NiNite's website, and they cover almost EVERY one of my favorite freewares!!!! WHY HAVEN'T I HEARD OF THIS?? Wow, that would have saved me LITERALLY ABOUT 3 HOURS last night on Download.com! *No option for DVDfab (I suggested it using their built-in window at the bottom)

I use Acronis too, very easy to use and extremely reasonable. You may always try the FREE TRIAL first before buying it just to make sure it's worth what you're paying for if you have a doubt => http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/
Hi again Grump :)

Is the Free Trial full-use? Seems like someone could take advantage of the trial but setting up their one ideal PC image, and then keep re-using that, but I'm sure they have found ways to keep people from doing that.

Do you know of any advantages of Acronis over Norton Ghost? THANKS guys :)

I believed its fully functional, I remember downloading the Trial version and used it then decided to buy it. Download it and give it a try, it won't hurt it's FREE...I think that you'll like it. From that link, it should give you more information about it. I think Acronis is more a User-friendly imaging software than Ghost. I've used ghost before, but gave up on it a while back. I used to like the old Ghost program on a "floppy disk", century ago. IDK why.

Downloading now... @ 7%!

I'll let you know how it goes...

PS: Now that I am totally reformatted and back to factory settings, what is the best most expedient method of setting up ICS for using my cell phone's incoming mobile-broadband connections (via USB) shared out through my laptop to my PS3 to get online? I have tried and read all across the internet but always hit a snag. THANKS :)
