My laptop was working fine up until a few weeks ago. It now won't allow me to connect to any wireless networks despite an excellent signal. It comes up with limited or no connectivity and when I try to repair it, it says Windows cannot repair the problem because it did not complete the following action, 'renewing your IP address'.

When I look at the details it says that the computer did not assign a network address.

When I look at the connection details it comes up with:

Physical Address: 00-13-CE-0E-80-B6
IP Address: 169.254.164.213
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway:
DNS Server:
WINS Server:

I am using a Dell Inspiron 6000.
Windows XP Home Edition - Version 2002, SP2
Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
Belkin F5D9230-4 Wireless-G Plus MIMO Broadband Router
I am using broadband.

I know it is not the router that is the problem because it works on other PCs.

I can connect using a wire without any problems.

The wireless connection is WEP encrypted but the passwords are definitely correct. I also cannot connect to a password-free network that I have access to.

When I run the nbtstat -n and ipconfig /all I get this:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Alexandra>nbtstat -n

Create a file in notepad named NODETYPE.REG with the following contents:

You should have 3 boxes on the bottom in NOTEPAD.
1)Filename : NODETYPE.REG
2)Save as type: all files
3)Encoding: ANSI
If you do not change it from txt type to All files type, then the file will actually be NODETYPE.REG.txt, this won't accomplish the desired result.

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters]

"NodeType"=dword:00000001
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

Thanks for your help but it has not worked still.

I'd remove all the saved wireless profiles in the laptop. Next, I'd disable ALL encryption and MAC filtering on the router. See if you can connect at that point. If so, we can work on getting the encryption working.

Remember, for WEP, you will also want to use ONLY the HEX key option, not the passphrase option for your keys.
