It was suggested I post a copy of my HJT log to this forum in the hope of getting a solution to the my problem.
I get the following message every time I:
(a) click on the "Files & folders" option in Search, &
(b) click on the "File types" tab under "Folder options" in Control panel.
The message reads "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience etc...."When I click on either "Send error report" or "Dont send", the monitor goes blank momentarily and the function I was in (i.e. search or folder options) closes.
Anything you can suggest that might resolve this annoyance will be greatfully appreciated. The HJT log analysis follows. Thankyou, mchaggis.

Check and fix this in HijackThis:

O23 - Service: SAVScan - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\SAVScan.exe (file missing)

See if this will repair the problem:

Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD.

Restart. Error message still there?

I suggest backing up your data now (which you should be doing regularly anyway). Even though this step will/should not cause any data lost, I suggest that you backup anyway.

Insert your Windows XP CD and restart your computer. Boot from the CD and let it load to the blue setup screen. Then choose the option to repair Windows...
