Hi

This is more annoying than a 'problem' , when I start the computor up it gets to the desktop as normal and then the 'program files' folder opens for no apparent reason.

It's been doing it for quite a while but I've just changed the hard drive and done a fresh install of xp and after updating and reinstalling some of the programs I use it's come back. It can be shut by just clicking the cross , just annoying as it does it everytime you startup.

I was keeping a watch for it , just in cass , while I installed the programs and thought I'd caught it but after uninstalling the program I thought it had started with i found it made no difference. Anyone got any ideas ? :4-dontkno

Thanks , Adam

Hi

Spike - In the startup folder the only program is - limewire on startup - which is the program files / limewire folder , would this cause it ?

Brent - In msconfig , program files isn't there on it's own only as location for other programs eg. abode / common files / java.

Don't know if this is related but I've noticed I've now started getting a red cross instead of pictures in my email's and yes the 'show pictures' box is ticked , and every now and then I'm getting a box pop up saying 'no disc' error

Thanks , Adam

Right , a bit of an update ,

I've sorted the email pics , I think I've sussed the ' no disc ' thing ( touch wood )
The only thing left is the folder that opens on start up - I booted in safe mode ( had to find time to do it ) and it didn't do it , is that significant ? Looking in any of the other places mentioned , there are programs that are in the program files folder listed but not the file folder itself ?

Help anyone ??

Do you have Norton antivirus installed by any chance? I ran across another post in another blog that had this to say about the same problem you're having:

This problem is caused by a Norton product making an invalid registry entry.

Look in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run

For something like:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec
Shared\CfgWiz.exe /GUID {DA9935BA-22F7-44ee-BD12-BD8B87700BEA}

Change it to:
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec
Shared\CfgWiz.exe" /GUID {DA9935BA-22F7-44ee-BD12-BD8B87700BEA}

..It needs the " "

Basically an update..or something..changed the registry entry, and without those quotes it stops at Common...and that causes Explorer to open the directory.

..I could be wrong, but I've seen the same problem in the past a few times, and this was the issue..

Here's the link where I found the above info <http://www.pilotsofamerica.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5743>

Good luck, Brent

Hi

Thanks for that , but I don't have norton. I run a free ver. of avg , I've got a funny feeling that it started about when I loaded nero but I've tried uninstalling it without any joy.

Just a guess but I read that Nero and SP3 do not work together well. You would have to reload the OS without XP and manually install any subsequent updates to avoid SP3.

Have you researched the Nero incompatibility angle thouroughly?

Merry Christmas, Brent.

And, I can't recall, but did you already try this:

Use regedit to kill anything in the run menus:

Click start > Select run > Type regedit >

open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Currentversion: look in these folders;
Run
RunOnce
RunOnceEx
RunServices
RunServicesOnce

If you find anything relating to old programs delete them; also do the same trick in HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Likewise, from the Run command box type MSCONFIG and select the start up and and tick off anything in there relating to the old program(s)

Adam, Is it Nero8 by chance? If so mate, IT IS SURE-FIRE-HELL to get off you computer and yes Nero8 caused my computer to do all kinds of crazy things, and yes, all different programs would run at different times. Nero8 is very, very hard to remove, but I finally did this, I made sure I was on-line at nero.com, i had the install disk in the cd/dvd rom drive or whatever you use, and then went to add/remove programs and that is the only way it would un-install itself. Hope this helps you mate!

Hi

Mine is Nero 6 and it should have read I uninstalled nero ( including going through manually ) but it didn't change anything so reinstalled it - I use it a fair bit. I've actually used 2 different disc's of nero 6 on 2 seperate fresh install's ( both my comp with a different hard drive ) with the same result.

I've had a quick look at the hkey set up but need to find the time to sit and go through it properly , but I shouldn't find any "old programs" as it's a fresh install and it started as I was installing everything from scratch.
