hello everyone.

I have as the title says an amd athlon xp 2600+ 1.95GHz processor. my computer is running slow and i found out that my CPU usage is ether 80% to 100% used. now i have no idea why it is like that i got tole that it might be my mother board going out. but i think it is that the BIOS is not 100% up to date. But that is just me thinking about that. I also heard something about my processor not being XM or MX rated (XP SP 2) but i dunno about that. I'm not that tech savey so i got lost quick. and my CPU temp is at 55-60C or 131-140F.
Thanks.

Hi, welcome to TSF.

What processes are using the CPU? Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete > Processes.
To get the temperatures down:
Unplug the computer from the wall and open the case.
Remove dust with canned, compressed air. Make sure the fans/heatsinks are clean.

I have moved this thread to "Motherboards, BIOS and CPU" support.

i have cleaned the inside of the computer. There is about 4 fans working on keeping it cool. there is all the prosses that need to be running. other then that i'm at a loss on what to do. my friend told me it always ran hot. I think it is a motherboard and CPU problem. not 100% sure tho. Do you have a list of what i need running and what i do not?

usually the 100% cpu usuage is the result of a boogered operating system

although your cpu may also be throttling back because of too much heat / I would fix the heat issue first

then I would think about a fresh install of win xp with service pack two intergrated into the install disk

this process is called slipstreaming ?????

I agree - the best would be to reinstall Windows.

If you don't want to do that:
Click Start > Run > type msconfig > click OK.
In MsConfig > click the Startup tab > "untick" everything except your firewall and antivirus > click Apply, then OK.
Restart the computer.
Scan your computer for malware.
Run disk defragmentation.

What are the temps after you removed the dust inside the case?
