I recently upgraded my CPU to an AMD 64 X2 6000+, and even more recently my computer has been randomly (or so it seems) freezing. It freezes for a few seconds, during which time the sound will stutter, then returns to normal. Any keys I press during the freezing are processed after, and I can move my cursor during the freezing. The freezing does not happen with my old processor in (I don't recall the specific model, but it was a single core AMD).

I first noticed the freezing a few weeks after installing the new CPU, when I started playing the MMO Age of Conan. The freezes will happen randomly as long as the game is started up (I can alt+tab out and watch videos and they will freeze, or even if the patcher for the game is open). At first the freezes seemed to happen far apart and get more frequent, but now it seems random. Also, they happen very frequently (about 30 seconds apart) and indefinitely when I am in a solo instance (for those unfamiliar, it is an area created only for me or the group I'm in, typically small and indoors). Outside the game I have rarely seen the freezing occur, other than what's stated above, and only in videos or other games. This could be because Conan is very hardware demanding.

I reinstalled Windows today, it did not help other than now the sound does not stutter when it freezes. The CPU never goes over 48C while under load.

Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
3 GB of RAM (A 2 GB stick and a 1 GB stick)
nVidia GeForce 8600 GT
450W Power Supply
All drivers are up to date.

Also,
1) When the freezing occurs, something (I assume the CPU) gets louder, and returns to normal afterwards.
2) It's not always a complete freeze, occasionally the screen will update a few times during the 'freeze'. It will also sometimes update the screen frequently throughout the freeze, as if it's not frozen but just lagging very badly, although this is rare.

I'm having this problem as well - I've tried reinstalling to 32 bit Vista, and also XP both 32 bit and 64 bit.

I get this issue in both Warhammer and Wow, so would love to have some suggestions.

I've tried forcing my GPU to take over a lot of the work, and also setting the games to run on a single processor.

I've noticed that it seems to be a cyclical CPU spike - the CPU loads to 100% then backs off again. I've turned off Cool n Quiet, but this doesnt seem to fix the problem :(

My system:

Windows Vista Home Premium 64 SP 1
4 GB ram - 2 x 2gb
450kw PSU
NVidia 9600 GT
