Hi guys, thanks for reading this,

Ok, i have a laptop..

about 2 days ago this started happening - no idea why.

I plug it into my works network and each time i start internet explorer i have to type my username and password to access the internet (which is fine, it's just my normal user/pass that i'd log into a computer at work with)

..so i do this and then i can use works connection to access the net.

but if i closed internet explorer...then open it again, it asks me for the user/pass AGAIN!

It's well annoying and i think because it does this i cant get on MSN/AIM now (i DID used to before).

My friend has a laptop on the same network with the same user rights and he doesnt have a problem - so it's just a config thing i think?

Any help and i'll love you!

Sounds like a proxy server

MS Proxy can require authentication. Or, a product like WebSense can require that you be authenticated to the Domain/AD as it allows/denies web access based on Domain/Group membership, logon ID, or a few other categories.

Check with your IT folks - bet you've got one or the other running.

Running on the server? or my laptop?

...the friend that has his laptop 'working'...is on the same domain and group as me, he's nothing 'special' like an admin.

Plus the IT guy is on holiday lol, so maybe it's self learning or something!!?!

Looking at your original post:

Is your laptop a member of the Domain or Active Directory? Is your friends? My guess is No to yours and Yes to his. The key is the logon-then-it-works part. You have a user account, but NOT a machine account.

..so i do this and then i can use works connection to access the net.
There you go ... logon and you can use network resources.

but if i closed internet explorer...then open it again, it asks me for the user/pass AGAIN!
Again ... logon is needed.

It's well annoying and i think because it does this i cant get on MSN/AIM now (i DID used to before).
Proxy server blocking access to these programs? The server is on the network, not your machine.

My friend has a laptop on the same network with the same user rights and he doesnt have a problem - so it's just a config thing i think?
Is his machine an active member of the Domain/AD? Does he log on to the Domain/AD? Yes to both is my take.

Your machine level user rights have nothing to do with this. The network is configured to accept HTTP requests only from the Proxy server. Wait till the IT guys come back and can tell you how they have it set up.

Let's back up a little

1 - Is this your work laptop or a personal one?

2 - When you boot up do you log on to the Domain/AD?

3 - If no to #2, that may be the reason why you're having the IE issue

4 - What has changed since it last worked?

5 - Your friend's computer - is it a work system or personal?
