Almost networked. xp pro

1213 Views 10 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  johnwill
I have 2 computers (both running xp pro) that i have connected through a hub. i have ip addresses configured for both, and firewalls allow access. I can use the shared printer from both computers. i can connect and disconnect the dialup connection on the host computer from the client computer. I cannot, however access any web pages on client computer when gateway is connected, or access shared folders from either computer. When I try to access any shared resource on either computer, I get an error message stating that i may not have permission to access the computer in question, access is denied. I would contact my systems administrator as per the instruction of my computer, but that's me... any ideas? :4-dontkno

Have you set up file sharing? This would allow the one machine to access the other via a password. Right click on the folder that you wish to share and select "Sharing and security..." This should get you started.
I checked the folder options, file sharing is turned on on both machines, and all files and folders I want to share are marked as shared. As far as passwords,I've never been prompted for one. Also, to clarify about the gateway I referred to, host comp runs a dialup connection that client should share.
update

So I did some digging and found some services that were disabled for god knows why. Now host comp can't access clients files, but can access clients printer. Client can access shared files on host and does not show gateway internet connection via host comp... one step closer i guess, got anything for me?
I would disable all of the firewalls to see if they are causing a problem...
Create an account on the machine with the shared resources that matches the name/password that is used to logon to the machine accessing the shares. Note that XP-Pro has a default that passwords are required for network access. To avoid network issues, as well as problems with scheduled tasks, password all the accounts.

client comp isn't firewalled at all. I've tried disabling the host firewall and restarting without it, behavior is exactly the same. I have my CLIENT ip set in my firewall to allow any access between the two.
I changed accounts and passwords to match, no change. Client can still access files, but host gets the same access is denied message. Under sharing and security, I only get the options to share and allow changes to be made (simple file sharing). Is the problem simple file sharing? and if so, I'm not sure how to go about changing and configuring.
Turn off Simple File Sharing. In Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View. The last entry in the list is Simple Sharing.
TSF truly DOES hold all of the world's secrets.

That was the end of it. I now have all the access I want from both computers. Thanks to everyone who posted, for all your help and ideas. I'll be back for any other issues.
