Ok well to start off I need a LOT of help. I have built 3 gaming desktops before for my brother and friends but I haven't done anything more then RAM, screen, and keyboard replacement for laptops, and that was a different laptop. My laptop has reached the point where not only am I getting some lag in games I also can not play games such as Planetside 2.

I'm currently running an Alienware M17-R1 Gaming laptop. I bought it just before dell bought out Alienware and I can not find any info about my system such as the motherboard and it's upgrading potential other then one time I found you could get up to 8gigs ram in it. If anyone out there knows where there are some archives of this information or a way to look up what I have without taking the system apart that would be greatly appreciated.

I'm currently running an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870X2 GC. and it's just not cutting it. My first challenge is finding out if the card can be upgraded(I'm guessing so since it's not integrated but am curious/nervous about price/space) and what it can be upgraded to. I'm guessing that there will be space restraints but I'm also assuming that there are cards that will fit. My second challenge would be figuring out how to get inside. Now I have seen a "Taking apart an Alienwar M17-R1X" Or something and it's just a bit different then mine and I'm not sure if the insides are the same or completely different so if anyone knows where a video or detailed guide is that would be greatly appreciated.

Another thing I would like to upgrade is my CPU but once again I do not know what my board can handle. I am currently running an Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz and it is reaching the point where it is just not cutting it at all. Once again my challenges would be 1. What can I upgrade to? 2. How do I get to it and upgrade it?

Also any tips on what to upgrade to would be excellent, but remember funds are tight right now, which is why I'm upgrading this not just getting a new system.

This is my first time really using a forum sorry if anything is done wrong or anything and thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Onboard Graphics is not upgradeable. Laptops, as well s most all OEM PC's, are not upgrade friendly. They're designed to use and replace when outdated, when they last that long.
Gaming, especially newer games, and laptops are not synonymous. If you want to game, with a good experience, you need a PC.
We have a suggested build list that covers most all needs: http://www.techsupportforum.com/for...ams-recommended-new-builds-2012-a-668661.html

Hmmmm...I thought I had seen some people talking about upgrading video cards in alienware laptops before but oh well. What about the CPU? Is there a way I could possibly upgrade that? I'm running an old Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHZ and would like to upgrade to somewhere around a 3.0GHZ at least but I can't find any paperwork from pre dell for alienware so I don't know what the motherboard can handle. I honestly don't have enough for a new system but could afford a few hundred for a new CPU.

OEM Mobo's/Bios are made for them and determining what CPU's are/are not compatible can be difficult to determine. Any CPU that was offered for that exact Model will "probably" be compatible.

Many Alienware laptops allow video upgrade, its one of the reasons for buying them but it appears that yours has an Nvidia 260 and I believe the only possible upgrade would be to 280 which would not give you that much. That may also take an ATi 4870 which might make a difference but please bear in mind upgrading a video card on a laptop is not an easy thing to do even when the option is available and for gaming Tyree is right the desktop is really the best way to fly. You can call Dell and check what I said because their customer support should know that, but remember the whole company is there to sell you a new pc, not necessarily help you upgrade one!
