I got a new laptop this summer and installed Age of Empires II on it. The installation worked fine, but when I click the desktop icon to play, the loading slash pops up and then goes away. The game doesn't actually start. I have researched this issue in forums and tried using the compatibility option to run it on Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 95, and with the 256 color option and low screen resolution option. I have updated my graphics drivers and yet it still does not work. Any more options that I can try?

Computer Specs:

Processor Intel Core i3
Graphics Intel HD 3000
OS Windows 7 64-bit
4 gigabytes of ram

I do 3 things to get an old game working.

In properties
  • Change compatibility to Win 98
  • Change security to allow full control for all users but the non admin user of your account matters most
  • Run as administrator

Steam is releasing a HD version of AoE 2 in a month or so. I'm pretty excited about it.
