I own a Acer Aspire T120c. It came with a AMD shepron 2800+ CPU that runs at 2.0ghz. I would like to upgrade my cpu but im not sure what socket my motherboard has and/or what it would support. I wonder if it would be possible to get a AMD duo processer or what else my motherboard would support. In need of some advise!
cheers
Melanie

I believe your socket is actually a 462 also known as Socket "A"

please verify this by looking around the edges of the cpu socket on the motherboard >>>>> you will find the numbers 462 or 754 ????

your board & bios will not support a dual core / you would need a new motherboard

give us you budget and we can make some suggestions for both cpu and mobo

I would be happy to pay around five hundred dollars. The only reason i didnt want to get a new motherboard is because i just bought a new video card but i guess i could sell it on ebay and buy a pci - express video card. With the video card to about seven hundred. I guess i wonder a what point would it be cheaper to buy a new tower. Would the new motherboard support DDR-2 ram and/or a pci-express video card. I was looking at the intel quad cpus but i didn't think that i would ever be able to put something like that in my out dated tower.

hello Melanie
tell me what you plan to use this machine for and I will see what I can come up with as far as parts for a new rig.. also for a ~700$ pc i would suggest using XP.
ie.
do you game? if so how serious?
do you design graphics? if so what type?
or
do you plan to just do school work, word processing, browsing the web, instant messaging type stuff?

also, if you are a gamer, would you be willing to go with a good mobo, cpu and go with a little less of a video card so you can upgrade it later.. and are you wanting to stay with AMD or would you mind switching?

WAX has all the right questions; but your budget should get you plenty of muscle

example

an awesome motherboard can be had at mwave.com / refurbished for about $80.00 or less 9example = gigabyte P35 chipset or Asus)

Intel core-2 duo E6550 = CPU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115030

Video card = 8800 GT >>>>if you are a very serious gamer / if not we can drop down a notch to the 8600GT (look on mwave.com / refurbished for this one too! )

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130301

Ram sticks = Corsair XMS DDR-2 800mhz with timings of 4-4-4-12 which costs around $87.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145034

BTW: all the refurbs I have bought from mwave.com have all come with a 15 day warranty (plenty of time to verify they work) all have come retail boxed and havent had a hick-up yet !

they change stock in there VERY fast each week their is generally a different motherboard manufacturers lisitngs in there >>>> you have to move FAST though, they go VERY fast

if you are not a casual gamer; this card will suit you

ATI x1950pro extreme 256mb gddr3 / 256 bit pci-express dual dvi / vivo / hdtv (oem - powered by ati) #X1950PRO256M (refurbished w/15-day warranty) (*Limit 1 pcs/customer) $139.00

SKU: CA52570 Mfg. Part No: X1950PRO256M

@ WAXED

I would agree with you on "truely" refurbished items, however the products I have bought from that catagory have all been overstock clearance which arrives in retail boxes with all literature etc >>>>> no signs of having ever been used

there is NO manufacturer that puts a recycled product into a retail box!

i use my pc for gaming for fun but not all the time. I spend alot of time on the computer and really want to have a pc that is fast(no waiting for anything to load). I load multiply programs. I also want to be able to use it for entertainment. I guess i want a pc that has no limits with what it can be used for. Im not sure if that was much help, i guess that best i can get around my budget.
I like that idea of a intel cpu and am open for a brand switch and yes i can wait for another video card. I just bought a new video card one a month ago but i wonder if i could use it on the new motherboard until i buy a pci-express video card it is a Nvidia geforce 7300GT 512mb AGP connection.
I am interested in designing graphics and interested doing alot more gaming. I dont no if it is possible but i would love a pc to be able to do everything fairly well, so i can deal with the latest games and try new things with the pc. This pc is sort of limited as it is.

ok, 500 dollars isnt much but lets see if you at least have something to help spend money in areas more of need...

when you reply with the following I will look for a setup.

things able to be used for new pc:
do you currently have a monitor?
do you currently have mouse and keyboard?
what case do you currently have?
what PSU do you currently have?

also does the 500$ have to include rebates, if any apply.. meaning can you shell out some extra money if you can get it back in rebates?
does the 500$ have to include shipping?

edit: typo.

i have a good monitor(lcd '22') and mouse and keyboard. I have a acer aspire T120c tower which i installed vista on. Not sure what PSU stands for? I can spend more, around five hundred just for the cpu and motherboard but if it is ends up six it doesn't matter. I was thinking i could buy the cpu and motherboard straight away, so i can get better products and hold off putting them in until i buy ram and/or a new video, if i need a new video card straight away to use the motherboard. Then around the new year i would spend another five to upgrade the video card to the pci-express and buy DDR2 ram.
I dont know about buying secondhand products but just seems risky over the net, new products are preferred, if there is a large enough saving to be made i would consider it.
For around a thousand excluding montiter, keyboard and mouse would it be better to just buy a new tower or would using the money to upgrade make my existing tower better . 700 went up to a thousand cause i forgot that i would have to upgrade the ram as well.
