Howdy.

I would like to upgrade the memory in an older Lenovo Thinkpad W530 (LENOVO 2436CTO ThinkPad W530).

This is what is currently installed:

7760 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

Slot 'ChannelA-DIMM0' is Empty
Slot 'ChannelA-DIMM1' has 4096 MB (serial number 149C7F66)
Slot 'ChannelB-DIMM0' is Empty
Slot 'ChannelB-DIMM1' has 4096 MB (serial number 149C7EBD)

dual core 204 pin socket

As far as I can determine, 16 GB is the maximum for this system.

I have a couple questions regarding this upgrade.

The Laptop manual itself says "You can increase the amount of memory in your computer by installing a double data rate three (DDR3) synchronous dynamic random
access memory (SDRAM) unbuffered small outline dual inline memory module (SO-DIMM), available as an option, in the memory slot of the computer."
And "Use either a PC3-10600 or a PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM memory module in your computer."

When I search on my model on the Lenovo website the only module available for purchase is "FRU-Lenovo 4GB PC3-12800 DDR3-1600MHz SoDIMM Memory."

So would it be better to install two 8 GB modules, replacing the current two 4 GB ones, or add two more 4 GB memory modules? Or is this possible given my system?

I found this on Amazon: A-Tech 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 / DDR3L 1600MHz SODIMM PC3L-12800 2Rx8 1.35V CL11 Non-ECC Unbuffered 204-Pin SO-DIMM Notebook Laptop RAM Memory Upgrade Kit .

Assuming I CAN install two 8 GB, modules, would this be a good choice?

What is the difference between PC3-10600 and PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.

So according to the scan, I can upgrade to 32 GB. If I am reading one of the manuals I have for the ThinkPad W530 if I have four 204-pin SO-DIMM sockets, then I have a 4-Quad model and can install up to 32 GB Ram.

Does that sound right?

I'm not familiar with the Crucial products. Obviously the scanner is their product so it recommends their memory chips :) . Would you rate them as a good choice?

i would check here it will tell you how much ram can be installed in a slot plus total amount it can run.
