Adding RAM and upgrading to Windows 7

1760 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  plisenbe
I have a HP Pavillion dv9000, currently running Windows Vista.

I bought more RAM and the upgrade for Windows 7. Which should I do first...add ram or do the system upgrade?

I have tried to replace the ram. New ram i'm trying to use is:
ddr2 pc2-5300
4GB (2x2G) Memory Master

When I replace the original ram with these, my computer wont start up. It keeps starting then shutting itself off. When i put the old ram back in, it starts up just fine. Did I get the wrong kind??

Also, dont know if i am running 32 or 64-bit for the windows 7 upgrade, how do I look up what my system currently is?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks!

what is the exact model number of your laptop. dv9000 is just a series. I would suggest going to crucial.com and run their scan to see how much ram your system can use and exactly what ram is needed.

looks like your system may only support 2 gigs at the max.
HP list the maximum amount of RAM is 2GB or 1GB per slot.
you should always try to do a clean install over a upgrade

It will say on the upgrade disk label if it is 32 or 64
You guys are right, ran the crucial.com scan and it says the max is 2G. Thanks so much for your help.
