Hi welcome to TSF

Try a check on your core Windows files ...

With your XP CD in a drive go to Start>Run and type sfc /scannow then press Enter and allow the file checker time to replace any missing or damaged files.

That's how sfc makes an exit - it is a little disconcerting in that it doesn't give any indication of completion or signal that all is OK. But it sounds as if it did the check and that your protected Windows files are all OK now.

But has it fixed the initial problem?

If not, did you run Housecall as suggested?

Is your PC showing any other unusual operating issues?

it seems that the prblem is still there. the only other abnormality is the norton thing but i dont have any proof but i think it may have to do with spybot , b/c everytime i run it i ge that error

I think the spybot link with this problem is suspicious and I do wonder whether you have some malware on your system that gets partly removed by spybot, but then at the same time some system files get chomped as well.

Have you tried running Adaware and Spybot in safe-mode?

Take a look here for more advice on tracking down malware:-
http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm

If you are unable to recover the Add/Remove icons, it might be worth running a 'repair' install of windows.

Another option would be to do a post on the HJT Help board with a description of the problem and ask for an opinion from the boards security specialists.
