Acer Extensa 5630 Black Screen

My son's Extensa 5630 laptop is not booting up and giving a black screen. It did this and I was able to get into the system repair and restored it to an earlier date. It worked for a couple days then died again. I think it is the hard drive, so I bought a Western Digital WDBABB2500ANC-NRSN 250 GB SATA, I set it to boot to the CD ad tried loading windows. It started to go, seemed like it was writing to the hard drive then it blue screened. The old Hitatchi drive is 3gb/s and this one is 1500mb/s. Is this my problem, the Motherboard will not support this hard drive?? Is there a way I can make this hard drive work? Help!

The error message was a blue screen that said "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps. Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. I do not have a Windows 7 disk, and the Windows 7 numbers on the bottom of the laptop are not legible, so I was loading Windows XP on the brand new hard drive when I received this error message. Thanks for any help I can get on this, I do not want to have to buy a second new hard drive with 3gb/s data transfer unless I have to.
