Accessing printer

1190 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  tcheavey
We have an HP 4600 colour laserjet on our network and it has been installed on the server, although it has its own IP address.

I have a laptop with Windows XP Home Edition on it but although I have tried a number of ways to connect to it, I don't seem to be able to.

So, either I am doing something wrong, or I need Windows XP Pro, which will allow me to log into the domain and thus access the printer.

Can anyone tell me if I should be able to use the printer using XP Home Edition?

Thanks.

XP Home is not able to access domain resources, could this be your problem?

Yes, assuming that the printer counts as a domain resource, then I think it is. Do you know of any work-round or is my only option to get XP Pro? (Apart, obviously, from installing the printer on a workstation - I can see other printers, just not anything connected to the server.)
I think you have identified your problem. :D FWIW, you can pick up stand-alone print servers for $100 or so that would solve this problem, maybe cheaper and less trouble than upgrading to XP-Pro.
Location, location, security location. That's a domain!
