access violations after spybot blocked java update

I'm having problems with my system and I'm afraid to try and fix them myself without knowing whether or not it's a malware problem first, in case I end up making it worse. Any help would be hugely appreciated!

Yesterday I tried to update java, but I received some messages from spypot that it had detected important registry changes. I wasn't sure if these were malware related or legitimate java changes so I clicked "deny" to all of them (unfortunately I didn't make note of what they were at the time). Then later when I tried to shut down my computer spybot was listed as being unresponsive and I received the following system error messages:

Access violation at address 004B6BE9 in module 'TeaTimer'. Read address 00000010

Both of these messages had a blank button below them, and when I clicked it the messages just kept popping up again. I figured the java update must have gone wrong and been the cause, so I went to add/remove programs and removed the java update, but when I did I received more messages from spybot:

(This may have been because I was attempting check for windows updates at the time. Instead of finding any the windows update page just kept searching until I gave up and closed it. For this message I hit "accept")

At which point I got freaked and just shut the computer down, afraid that I was going to make things worse. This morning I went in to safe mode and did an AVG antivirus check and ran spybot, AVG anti-spyware, and a-squared which all came up clean.

However, my Adaware won't update. It says my definitions are 90 days old but when I attempt to download the update it stops at 5% and then says "no components available". This has been happening for months, actually. But I'm afraid to re-install it because when I googled the problem I found a lot of reports from people who had ended up with even more out of date definitions after re-installing.

This time, when going through the steps before posting, I didn't have a problem with windows update. It didn't detect any updates, but at least the page didn't just keep searching continually to no avail.

When I downloaded dss.exe it ran right away and didn't give me an extra.txt. Months ago when I had a trojan I ran the program and it did give me an extra.txt, so I'm not sure why it was different this time.

A apologize for all the exhausting descriptions. I'm just hoping this will make sense to someone. I've had a virus and a trojan in the past that have made me pretty nervous around my own computer. Again, any help is really appreciated. Every time I try to shut down the computer I get these Access Violation messages.
