Hi

Ive got an access point up in my attic which has recently stopped working. Im unsure of the make at the moment but im hoping someone can tell me how i can figure out what its ip address? Im sure there is a program available to ping and get back a list of active address's?

Im a bit of a noob when it comes to networking so tips and advice would be very useful!

If it has an ip address, it will be listed on your router's DHCP lease list.

I know it works, because it appears on my iPhone but it also has no security setup hence why i also need to figure the IP. Its a bit of a job to get up there and check the model and make but i remember last time i had too i found almost nothing on the net about its settings.

a product like angryip can scan your local network for ip addresses.
Sounds like you assigned a static ip to the AP

If your router is set to x.x.x.1 you could try pinging .2 to see if that is what you set it to.

I've tried a program like that before but hD trouble getting it work tbh. I have a feeling it's not 192.xxx.x.x etc

Are there any other common ip ranges for access points other than that? Don't think you can scan all on angryip?

toms88 you only scan the ip range of your subnet.

Not sure why you think the AP isn't in the same 192.x.x.x subnet you are in. It had to have been assigned a local ip for you to set it up!

If you mean wireless router when you say access point, your router's IP address will be your computer's default gateway. If you open a DOS window (go to Run or Search, depending on your version of Windows) and type CMD then press Enter. In the DOS window type ipconfig and press enter.

@Wand3r3r

What range would you recommend i should scan? Ive put 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.6.254

Thats guna take a while to scan, is it worth scanning that far you think?

I would only scan the ip subnet you are on. Otherwise lookup the docs for the unit to see what its default ip address is.

BTW there is no DOS in windows. That "black box" is a command prompt not to be confused with disk operating system

I found the manual in PDF on the net. The default ip is supposed to be 169.254.128.132 but that didnt work. Although it looks familiar and im sure i used that before.

The AP is a Proxim Orinoco AP-600. It suggests using a program called ScanTool to find it using the MAC address which i have. Cant find such a program ANWHERE for download on the net.

This is the url for the manual should you wish to have a look!

That 169. IP address is a default that Windows assigns when it can't get an IP address from a DHCP server. If you have that then you aren't connecting to the AP.

P.S. Pardon me for showing my age by calling the Command Prompt window a DOS window. I fail to see any confusion my calling it that caused so it doesn't appear to have been an issue.

Well thats the default IP as assigned by the manufactor in the manual. I really cant remember if i changed it though as im sure you get the option once you got to the AP front end.

Kinda stuck tbh, i scanned a stupid amount of Subnets on AngryIP over the last few hours but it could be anything! Is there not a way i can ping a certain port on my router to see the IP on the other end of the CAT5 Cable?

Anyone got some ideas? There must be an alternative. Ive got Xirrus installed but im not sure if that will let me see the IP address, so far i can see its MAC Address and the IP Address of the router, not the AP

toms88 for all the time you have spent I would think popping up to the attic and retrieving this clearly non funtional unit would have saved you a ton of time.

rodcarty would you call all tape decks 8 tracks?
certainly not right? So why call a ntldr based command window a "dos" window? Most people today have never see real dos.
