ac adapter not plugged in but shows its still plugged in and charging. This is very strange. I have tested the ac adapter and it's putting out 19v, just put a brand new battery it. I thought it was the battery because when old battery was in it wouldn't charge and the icon would show "plugged in, not charging". I have trying a static discharge on the system and have uninstalled the acpi driver in device manager. with the new battery in it say " plugged in, charging" the new battery is in fact charging, but when ac is removed from laptop icon still shows plugged in, charging

any reasons why this might happen? Thanks in advance

Try this free software. BatteryCare
If charging/discharging/full charge notifications work well, you have 2 options.
1- In batterycare options you can replace the windows notification.
2- Re-install windows.

Good luck.

Well, you can easily confirm that..
1- With previous advice.
2- If you have no confirmation on first advice, make a bootable linux cd/drive, boot and confirm if it persists.

ok I tried everything you asked me to do, no dice. It still shows that the laptop is plugged in BUT it's not plugged in??? took laptop apart, took motherboard out,, connected battery and the led light is orange. I cleaned around battery connection with alcohol and a toothbrush plugged battery back in, led light on MOBO went green for about 60 sec then went back to orange. also with battery plugged in I used my multimeter and checked over by the dc jack and it shows 12v power to the jack????

Why do you think this is happening, and what do you think may be the problem? Idk if a chip is bad and what chip or how to find it. It almost seems like a chip is open and not closing a circuit. any help would be great. will wait for your response.

thanks danny

Oh man, this is a hard one.. Very odd that you get 12V at AC without a charger connected..

I'd probably quit the repair, but if possible you can..
- Try another charger
- Try another battery
If none works it's the board. And either repair or a new one it's an expensive solution.

Good luck.

while checking different chips I found that when I played around testing all those pins on the SMSC MEC1300-NU chip that I would get the led on the board to switch and stay green instead of orange with both the ac and battery plugged in, I don't know if this is the power management chip or something else, so I think that chip is bad, I have already removed the SMSC MEC1300-NU chip and ordered another one. Had to order it from china and it will probably take some time to get here. Wish I could have found a us seller to get it faster. Oh well I will follow up after new chip is installed. I hope this is the problem.

Thank you for your help,
Danny

Only now I've noticed that through out the thread the laptop make and model wasn't mentioned.
Have you googled for the laptop schematics?

no didn't google, I hoping I guessed right, lol. it was the only chip that I got a reaction from.

I'm self taught on laptop repair and I have never got instructions on how to read schematics. I've looked at them for other laptops but I can't figure out what's what. . also it's a Samsung I3 processor, npR540-ja09us
