I bought the asus A7N8X deluxe and an Athlon xp 2600+ thoroughbred about 6 months ago and they worked fine until 3 weeks ago. At first it stoped recognizing my cdrw intermitantly, then all together. and of course my slave DVD drive failed to recognize. I've checked both drives and both work fine in my other system for hours on end. and my DVD (but not the cdrw) will run fine as master ide 2, but not as slave IDE 1 "80 conductor IDE cable not installed". I've reset my bios and both worked fine as master/slave (in any order) for about 1 hour and then it started doing it over again, without any change to the bios settings. i've checked my power supply and changed IDE cables, no help. asus tech support just gives me the run around...help!

I've just installed this motheboard with an Athlon XP 2500+ and I'm getting *very* similar symptoms.

Basically, I'm having a really hard time getting my hard drive recognised. It's a new drive - my old one died but was still under warranty, it's a Seagate 340016A. I installed all the bits into my computer, turn it on, have a look in the bios - all looks good so far. I get an old boot disk to get into DOS and get FDisk going. While I'm away from the computer, it goes back to the initial FDisk screen that says about enabling large drives.

So I try to run it again - no joy. From then on, I can't get my drive recognised. The bios on the motherboard recognises it but not anything I need to get the drive formatted.

I changed the ribbon at one point and started to get the "80 conductor IDE cable not installed" message as well. Swapping the ribbon I got with the motherboard back in solved that.

I've been trying Seagate's tools but they're as much use as a chocolate teapot. They create a virtual drive with some files but doesn't seem to do much else (trying to run what seems like the relevant programs doesn't do much).

Now, it's freezing when trying to detect what's on the IDE ports. I was thinking it was the drive but doing a search and reading the above... I don't know any more.

"80 conductor IDE cable not installed"

You should be using an 80 conductor IDE cable you can tell the difference by the number of wires it has and there is usually a blue connector that has to go on the motherboard connector.

My problem was a faulty hard drive. The new one that Seagate sent didn't work :upset:

I'm not sure if I found the root of the problem, but I pulled out the cd-burner (again) set my HD as primary master and DVD as secondary master. No change, until I cleared my cmos...tada, It works fine now. My best guess is my cd-rw went bad and the dieing process somehow screwed up something in cmos. It's been a couple weeks now since the change and no problems yet.

I had the same problem with Drive recognition until I took out the jumper completely on my Hard drive. It's default seemed to work. Check the jumper settings on yours, might have been the problem.
