Ok. Today I upgraded my Dell Inspiron 1525 from the standard Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows Vista Ultimate. First part of my problem is that i'm not able to connect to the internet. The computer doesn't even detect a connection. The Wi-Fi connector on the side isn't working (i'm assuming, since the light won't light up). Another thing i guess you guys might need to know in order to help me with that problem is that the connection i'm trying to connect to is wireless. I tried to upload the software for my Linksys WRT54G onto my laptop, but it says i need to enable the "Network Adapter". I tried searching for the Network Adapter in the Control Panel and didn't find it until i found the Device Manager. I also couldn't find it in the Device Manager until i right clicked on show hidden items, or something to that effect. It then brought up a list of a good amount of items under Network Adapter and says they're all working. Bottom line, can someone tell me how to connect to the internet? Ask me more questions if you need more information.

Okay, the second and probably harder to solve part. When i installed Vista Ultimate, it automatically set up an Administrator user account and took all my old Vista data and put it on a folder on my C Drive called Windows.old. Is there any way i can just sort of paste the user settings from my old Vista to this one? I can't really see why not, it has all the data, i'm just not sure how to. Also, if i get this problem solved, it might automatically solve the first one, as my Internet connection worked before.

Well, thanks for taking all the trouble to read this and deal with my problems.

Does the wired Ethernet connection from your laptop to the wrt54g give you internet access?

Run msinfo32 and save it as a system info file (NFO file extension):
START | type msinfo32 & hit enter. Save the file in NFO format - you'll see it when you go to save it. Zip it up and attach to your next post.

RE: Windows.old - it is nothing more than a backup and cannot be used actively. You can only copy out docs, pix, music, etc... items from your user profile folder. Programs have to be re-installed - as do all drivers - like the one missing (??) for your wifi adapter.

Thanks for getting back to me. As long as i can get through this internet debacle, it should be fine, i can re-install all the stuff just fine, and i think you're right, i'm missing the driver for the Wi-fi connecter. I found the drivers for it on the Dell website, and brought them over and installed them on my laptop, but it isn't working. I attached my msinfo32 file, zipped up and ready to go, so if someone could tell me exactly what to do, that'd be great.

For some reason the msinfo32 was corrupt.

Go into Device Manager (START | type devmgmt.msc), expand the network tree and un-install all devices found under it. Right-click on each; un-install. Then re-boot. Vista will re-install them upon re-boot.

Do you see your wifi in there?

Also run ipconfig -
START | type cmd.exe | right-click on cmd.exe | run as admin | then paste (to paste into cmd screen, right-click at top of screen, select Edit, select Paste):

Code:
ipconfig /all > %temp%\0.txt & start notepad %temp%\0.txt
A notepad will open; paste all contents into next post.
