Hi - new member, Joey Atlas here...

My Dell Laptop started acting up in the last 3 days - & today I tried to boot up & all I get is the following:

A Disk Read Error Occured
Press Cntl + Alt + Del to Restart

I try to restart - but keep getting the same message. I am not very tech oriented - but can find my way around with guidance.

Any help will be tremendously appreciated.

Thanks,
Joey Atlas

Welcome to TSF,

If you have an XP install cd, boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /f. It may take awhile depending on size of hard drive

What if I cant find install cd..,

Ill give that a try - if I can find CD.
Do I insert it into the drive & then boot up?

If i cant find it, do i have any other option?

Thanks for your help.

yes. insert the cd in the drive and reboot. when rebooting, enter bios (most likely by pressing the F2 key) and make sure the cd rom drive is the first boot device

you might be able to boot into safe mode (press the F8 key immediately after turning on or restarting) and then scheduling chkdsk to run on reboot. start>run> type in chkdsk /r when asked if you want to run it on next boot, the answer is yes

no install dics but

no install cds yet - but used F12 to move on...
my choices are
- Internal HDD
- Bios Setup
- Diagnostics

I have some options on bootup order in HDD - do i start with HDD ? or one of the other places?

Thanks.

Choose diagnostics, then I believe you can choose to check the hard disk. I think your hard drive is bad, but we need to run a diagnostic to find out for sure. If that's not the right one, then go back and choose HDD.

So far here is what is coming back:

Uncorrectable Data Error or media is write protected

- im getting these in several places

... also got one with "Address mark not found or media error.

I have no clue what this stuff means or what to do next.

Your help is greatly appreciated.
