98 nissan altima RAPID TICKING

3736 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Midnight Tech
I have a 98 nissan altima and today while I was driving it started ticking
it has 140,000 miles on it. the ticking noise is coming from the top part of the motor under the valve cover almost directly under the oil cap. it is loud but when the gas pedal is pressed it quiets down. Car still runs normal not underpowered in any way. I have my own opinions but would like another. RAPID TICKING

It may be a valve train or timing chain issue. 140k miles is rather high and it could also be oil pressure related as well. Without hearing the noise first hand it is really hard to tell for sure.

thank you James nice site goes over what i think too! thank you for your reply
I was gonna say valves also. 140K is a lot of miles to have on the originals, it may be time for new ones. My car requires them every 60K miles for peak performance.
Is there a provision to adjust the valves on that engine? I know on the version of that engine in my truck (Z24i) you can adjust the valves.
